A New Decade: Welcome to 2020

A New Decade Of MacKenzie Leather

Another year has passed, and the start of a new decade is upon us.
We look back at the last 10 years of Mackenzie moments, celebrating the highs, and thankful for the lows that come alongside the joy of running a small business.

It’s the dawn of a brand new decade here on planet Earth, and regardless of how or in what state you may have woken up in on this New Years morning, there is something significant and undoubtably exciting surrounding the thought of a fresh decennium.

But first, we take a look back through the past 10 years. As a small business, troubling times and worrisome situations often take a strong hold during day-to-day life, and it’s often impossible to remember the last glimpse of good news! So with a moderate amount of Mackenzie trumpet-blowing, we take a reflective look through the highlights that happened during the “twenty-tens”…

Our Team

On the 11th of November 2011 (and at 11pm!) Simon bought Mackenzie Leather Edinburgh, neatly and poignantly marking the start of our journey through to where we stand as a brand today.  Partnership with our Creative Director, Elena, followed soon after, bringing her Spanish flair and determination for growth.

In 2017, our flagship store opened in the heart of Edinburgh Old Town, situated just off the Royal Mile down the historic St Mary’s Street. With the new retail space came our traditional workshop, offering the chance to open our authentic production process to the public and the opportunity to bring transparency to our name. Welcoming Ed, Andrew and Kevin to the team between 2017-19 has added a wealth of talent, craftsmanship and character to the Mackenzie family, bringing us firmly to the forefront of our trade.

Our Awards

Having a creative business in a craft industry comes with the affirming perk of potentially winning a variety of awards. We’ve been honoured enough to be recognised by a multitude of associations, fellow craftspeople and businesses alike, for our quality, brand values and unique design. Our standout moment of the last 10 years would certainly be our journey with the Scotlands Business Awards, a public-nominated and verified organisation built on recognising the very best in business across Scotland. In 2018 we were selected by our customers for “The Best Independent Retailer” award, and were invited to regional finals in Edinburgh – unfortunately we lost out on the night, but were instead (and unknowingly) entered for another award, “Best Craft or Creative Business” – which we won! This took us through to the national final in Glasgow, where we took home the award and won again, crowning Mackenzie as the best in Scotland!

Awards and achievements, regardless of how small, recognised or prestigious really do give us the motivation to carry on crafting and grafting to create a future for our team and continue our passion for quality, handmade leatherwear. We’re delighted and honoured to have ended this decade with further accomplishments to the Mackenzie name.
